Indications |
Augmentin/Augmentin ES Infections of resp tract, GUT, skin & soft tissue, bone & joint. Dental infections, septic abortion, puerperal sepsis, intra-abdominal sepsis. Septicaemia, peritonitis, postsurgical infections (inj only). Augmentin SR Short-term treatment of resp tract infections.

Dosage |
Tab Adult & childn >12 yr Mild to moderate infections 375 mg tid or 625 mg bid. Severe infections 625 mg tid or 1 g bid. Susp TID Childn >6 yr 10 mL tid, 1-6 yr 5 mL tid, <1 yr 25 mg/kg/day. Severe infections May be increased up to 50 mg/kg/day in divided doses 8 hrly. Dental infections Adult & childn >12 yr 375 mg tid or 625 mg bid for 5 days. Susp BID Childn 7-12 yr 10 mL of 228 mg/5 mL susp, 5 mL of 457 mg/5 mL susp or 90/6.4 mg/kg/day of 642.9 mg/5 mL susp bid, 2-6 yr 5 mL of 228 mg/5 mL susp, 2.5 mL of 457 mg/5 mL susp or 90/6.4 mg/kg/day of 642.9 mg/5 mL susp bid. Severe infections 90/6.4 mg/kg/day of 642.9 mg/5 mL susp bid. Inj Adult 1,000/200 mg 8 hrly. Severe infections 1,000/200 mg 4-6 hrly or 2,000/200 mg 12 hrly or 4-8 hrly. Surgical prophylaxis Procedures <1 hr: 1,000/200 mg at induction of anesth. Procedures >1 hr: As for procedures <1 hr, w/ up to 4 doses of 1,000/200 mg in 24 hr. GI surgery 2,000/200 mg over 30-min infusion at induction of anesth. If procedure >2 hr, repeat same dose, once only, by 30-min infusion 2 hr after the end of previous infusion. Childn 3 mth-12 yr 25/5 mg/kg or 50/5 mg/kg 6-8 hrly, up to 3 mth, >4 kg Up to 25/5 mg/kg or 50/5 mg/kg 8 hrly, up to 3 mth, <4 kg 25/5 mg/kg or 50/5 mg/kg 12 hrly. ES Susp Childn ≥3 mth Recommended dose: 90/6.4 mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses 12 hrly for 10 days. Childn w/ body wt 8 kg 3 mL; 12 kg 4.5 mL; 16 kg 6 mL; 20 kg 7.5 mL; 24 kg 9 mL; 28 kg 10.5 mL; 32 kg 12 mL; 36 kg 13.5 mL. All doses to be taken bid. SR tab Adult ≥16 yr Community-acquired pneumonia 2 tab bid for 7-10 days. Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis 2 tab bid for 7 days. Acute bacterial sinusitis 2 tab bid for 10 days.

Should be taken with food (Take at the start of meals for better absorption & to reduce GI discomfort. 375 mg, 625 mg & 1g tab: May be divided into halves. Whole tab & divided halves must be swallowed whole, do not chew/crush. SR Tab: May be divided along the score-line. Divided halves must be taken at the same time. Whole tab & divided halves must be swallowed whole, do not chew/crush.). |
Contraindications |
Hypersensitivity to penicillins & cephalosporins. History of amoxycillin-clavulanate-associated cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction.

Special Precautions |
Renal & hepatic impairment; infectious mononucleosis. CrCl <30 mL/min. Regular monitoring of hepatic function. Maintain adequate fluid intake & urinary output. Prolonged use may result to overgrowth of nonsusceptible organism. Patients on anticoagulants. Patients w/ phenylketonuria (Augmentin susp contains aspartame). Pregnancy.

Adverse Drug Reactions |
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, candidiasis, mucocutaneous candidiasis, rash, genital moniliasis, abdominal pain. Rarely, pseudomembranous colitis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, crystalluria, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, reversible leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, haemolytic anaemia, CNS disturbances.
