Indications |
Treatment of established postmenopausal osteoporosis. Treatment of osteoporosis in men at high risk of fractures. Prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women w/ increased risk of osteoporosis. Prevention & treatment of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in men & women who are either initiating or continuing systemic glucocorticoid treatment (daily dosage equiv to ≥7.5 mg of prednisone) for chronic diseases.

Dosage |
Treatment & prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis One 35-mg tab once wkly or one 5-mg tab once daily. Treatment of osteoporosis in men One 35-mg tab once wkly or one 5-mg tab once daily. Treatment & prevention of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in men & women 5-mg tab once a day.

Overdosage |
View Actonel overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose. |
Administration |
Should be taken on an empty stomach (5-mg tab to be taken at least 30 min before the 1st food/drink/medication of the day; or at least 2 hr from any food/drink at any other time of the day, & at least 30 min before going to bed. 35-mg tab to be taken at least 30 min before the 1st food/drink/medication of the day. To be taken on the same day each week. 5-mg & 35-mg tab: Take w/ a full glass (180-240 mL) of plain water while in an upright position. Do not lie down for at least 30 min after taking. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush/suck.). |
Contraindications |
Hypocalcaemia, pregnancy & lactation, severe renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min).

Special Precautions |
History of oesophageal disorders which delay oesophageal transit or emptying, inability to remain in an upright position for at least 30 min after tablet intake; correct hypocalcaemia & treat other disturbances of bone & mineral metabolism before initiating therapy.

Adverse Drug Reactions |
Bone pain, muscle & joint pain & stomachache. Uncommon: Duodenitis, glossitis, iritis.

Multivalent cations (eg Ca, Mg, Fe, Al) may interfere w/ absorption of Actonel.

Pregnancy Category (US FDA) |
