Dosage |
Flagyl Trichomonas vaginalis infection of the GUT 1 tab tid for 7 days. Flagyl 400 Trichomonas vaginalis infection of the GUT 2 g as a single dose once daily or 2 tab morning & 3 tab evening for 2 consecutive days. Flagyl/Flagyl 400 Intestinal amoebiasis Adult 800 mg tid. Childn 7-10 yr 400 mg tid, 3-7 yr 200 mg qid, 1-3 yr 200 mg tid. Hepatic amoebiasis Adult 400 mg tid. Childn ½ the dosage for intestinal amoebiasis. Duration of treatment: 5-10 days. Prevention & treatment of anaerobic infection after abdominal & gynecological surgery Adult 400 mg tid. Duration of treatment: 5-10 days. Flagyl-S Amoebiasis: Susceptible subject Adult & childn >10 yr 4 tsp tid. Childn 7-10 yr 2 tsp tid, 3-7 yr 1 tsp qid, 1-3 yr 1 tsp tid. Duration: 5 days. Chronic amoebic hepatitis & amoebic liver abscess also other forms of extra-intestinal amoebiasis Adult & childn >10 yr 2 tsp tid. Childn 7-10 yr 1 tsp tid, 3-7 yr ½ tsp qid, 1-3 yr ½ tsp tid. Duration: 5-10 days. Urogenital trichomoniasis Adult & childn >10 yr 1 tsp tid. Childn 7-10 yr ½ tsp tid, 3-7 yr ½ tsp bid, 1-3 yr ¼ tsp tid. Duration: 7 days. Giardiasis Adult & childn >10 yr 10 tsp. Childn 7-10 yr 5 tsp, 3-7 yr 3-4 tsp, 1-3 yr 2½ tsp. To be given once daily. Duration: 3 days. Acute ulcerative gingivitis (Vincent's disease) Adult & childn >10 yr 1 tsp tid. Childn 7-10 yr ½ tsp tid, 3-7 yr ½ tsp bid, 1-3 yr ¼ tsp tid. Duration: 3 days. |

Should be taken with food (Take w/ or after meals. Swallow tab whole, do not chew/crush.). |

Special Precautions |
If administered for >10 days, haematological tests are recommended. Re-administer immediately after haemodialysis. Active disease of CNS except for brain abscess, hepatic encephalopathy, active or chronic severe peripheral & CNS diseases due to risk of neurological aggravation. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. |
Adverse Drug Reactions |
Unpleasant taste in mouth, furry tongue, GIT disturbances, urticaria, angioedema. Drowsiness, dizziness, headache, ataxia, skin rashes, pruritus, darkening of urine. Peripheral neuropathy or transient epileptiform seizures (prolonged therapy). Leucopenia. Rarely anaphylaxis.

Drug Interactions |
Alcohol may cause disulfiram-like reaction. Psychotic reactions w/ disulfiram. Potentiates anticoagulant effect of warfarin-type oral anticoagulants. Phenobarb increases the metabolism of metronidazole. Plasma levels of lithium, cyclosporin, 5-FU & busulfan may be increased.

Pregnancy Category (US FDA) |
Category B: Either animal-reproduction studies have not demonstrated a foetal risk but there are no controlled studies in pregnant women or animal-reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect (other than a decrease in fertility) that was not confirmed in controlled studies in women in the 1st trimester (and there is no evidence of a risk in later trimesters). |
