Indications |
Ulcerative colitis. Tab/Sachet Crohn's disease. Enema/Supp Ulcerative proctosigmoiditis. |

Dosage |
Tab/Sachet Ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease Adult Acute: Up to 4 g daily in divided doses, maintenance for ulcerative colitis: 2 g daily in divided doses. Childn >2 yr 20-30 mg/kg daily. Enema Adult 1 enema at bedtime. Supp Adult 1 supp once-bid. |

Administration |
May be taken with or without food (Tab: Swallow whole, do not chew/crush. If necessary, tab may also be halved along the score-line or suspended in water/juice immediately before admin. Sachet: Empty contents of sachet onto the tongue immediately after opening. Wash down all the granules w/ water or juice so that none remain in the mouth. Do not chew the granules. ). |

Contraindications |
Sensitivity to salicylates. Severe hepatic or renal disease. |

Special Precautions |
Patients allergic to sulfasalazine. Renal & hepatic impairment. Infant & childn <2 yr. |

Adverse Drug Reactions |
Gastric discomfort (diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting), headache & rash. Minor rectal irritation. Muscle & joint pain, temporary hair loss, shortness of breath, liver & kidney dysfunction, changes in blood components & inflammation of the cardiac muscle & sac (rarely).

Pregnancy Category (US FDA) |
Category B: Either animal-reproduction studies have not demonstrated a foetal risk but there are no controlled studies in pregnant women or animal-reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect (other than a decrease in fertility) that was not confirmed in controlled studies in women in the 1st trimester (and there is no evidence of a risk in later trimesters). |
