Contents Glipizide
Indications NIDDM.
Dosage Initially 5 mg/day may be adjusted in increments of 2.5-5 mg as determined by blood glucose response. Max: 20 mg/day.
Administration Should be taken with food (Swallow whole, do not chew/crush/divide.).
Contraindications Type 1 diabetes, ketoacidosis, diabetic coma, stress eg fever, trauma, infection or surgery.
Special Precautions Hypoglycemia, loss of blood glucose control. Renal, hepatic or adrenal/pituitary insufficiency. Preexisting severe GI narrowing (pathologic or iatrogenic). Elderly, debilitated & malnourished patients. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Drug Reactions Leucopenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, aplastic anemia, pancytopenia, hypoglycemia, hyponatremia, disulfiram-like reactions, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, epigastric discomfort, vomiting, cholestatic jaundice, toxic hepatitis, hepatic porphyria, allergic skin reactions.

Drug Interactions Hypoglycemic effects enhanced by antifungals (miconazole, fluconazole, voriconazole), NSAIDs, salicylates, alcohol, β-blockers, ACE inhibitors, H2-receptor antagonists, MAOIs, sulfonamides, chloramphenicol, probenecid, coumarins. Hypoglycemic effects reduced by phenothiazines (chlorpromazine), corticosteroids, sympathomimetics (ritodrine, salbutamol, terbutaline), thiazides, thyroid products, estrogens, progestogens, OC, phenytoin, nicotinic acid, Ca-channel blockers, INH.
