Effects of this medicine
This medicine increases GABA and dopamine concentration in the brain, and promotes metabolism of serotonin to activate inhibitory systems and to suppress excessive excitation of the brain. It consequently shows antiepileptic action and antimanic action by promoting GABA neurotransmissions.
It is usually used in the treatment of epilepsies, character and behavior disorder (bad mood, prone to get angry, etc.) associated with epilepsy, manic disorder and manic state in bipolar disorder. |
Before using this medicine, tell your doctor/pharmacist

If you ever experienced any allergic reaction (itch, rash etc.) to any medicine.
If you are a patient with hepatic disorder, encephalopathy of unknown cause or urea cycle disorder.
If the patient is in a coma.
If you have a family history of infant death of unknown cause.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you are using any other prescription or nonprescription (OTC) medicine. (It is important to reduce the risk of drug interactions.)

Dosage regimen (proper use of this medicine)

General dosage regimen: For adults, take 2 to 6 g (400-1200 mg of the active ingredient) daily, in 2 to 3 divided doses. The dosage may be adjusted according to the age or symptoms. Strictly follow the instructions of your doctor/pharmacist.

Missed dose: Take a dose as soon as possible because an attack may occur if you missed a dose. Then, take the next dose at interval of approximately 4 hours. DO NOT take double doses to make up for the missed dose.

Overdose: If you took too much of the medicine (more than ordered), check with your doctor/pharmacist.

Others: Do not stop taking the medicine without the instructions of your doctor.

Precautions while using this medicine

The medicine may cause sleepiness, and decline of attention, concentration and reflection. Avoid driving a car or operating dangerous machinery.

Side effects of this medicine
Common side effects are reported as below. If any of them occurs, check with your doctor/pharmacist: somnolence, ataxia (unable to move the limbs), nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, gastric disorder, general malaise, etc.In rare cases, symptoms described below may be the sign of side effects indicated in brackets [ ]. If they occur, stop taking your medicine and check with your doctor immediately.

general malaise, loss of appetite, yellowing in skin and white of eye [hepatic disorder such as fulminant hepatitis]

general malaise, somnolence, tremor of limbs [consciousness disorder accompanied by hyperammonemia]

general malaise, fever, purpura [hemolytic anemia, pure red-cell aplasia, pancytopenia, thrombocytopenia, granulocytopenia]

severe abdominal pain, fever, nausea [acute pancreatitis]

fever, erythema, blisters, conjunctival congestion [oculomucocutaneous syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis]
