Effects of this medicine

This medicine is an anti-virus medicine and inhibits DNA replication to suppress the growth of herpes simplex/varicella/herpes zoster virus.
It is usually used to treat herpes simplex, suppression of herpesvirus infection (herpes simplex) caused by hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, herpes zoster and recurrence of genital herpes.

Before using this medicine, be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist

  • If you have previously experienced any allergic reactions (itch, rash, etc.) to any medicines.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are taking any other medicinal products. (Some medicines may interact to enhance or diminish medicinal effects. Beware of over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements as well as other prescription medicines.)

Dosing schedule (How to take this medicine)

  • [Adults]
    Herpes simplex : In general, for adults, take 0.5g (200mg of the active ingredient) at a time, 5 times a day.
    To suppress herpesvirus infection (herpes simplex) caused by hematopoietic stem cell transplantation : In general, for adults, take 0.5g (200mg of the active ingredient) at a time, 5 times a day from 7 days prior to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation to 35 days after transplantation throughout.
    Herpes zoster : In general, for adults, take 2g (800mg of the active ingredient) at a time, 5 times a day.
    [Children]
    Herpes simplex : In general, for children, take 0.05g/kg (20mg of the active ingredient) at a time, 4 times a day. DO NOT exceed the maximum dosage, 0.5g (200mg) at a time.
    To suppress herpesvirus infection (herpes simplex) caused by hematopoietic stem cell transplantation : In general, for children, take 0.05g/kg (20mg of the active ingredient) at a time, times a day from 7 days prior to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation to 35 days after transplantation throughout. DO NOT exceed the maximum dosage, 0.5g (200mg) at a time.
    Herpes zoster : In general, for children, take 0.05g/kg (20mg of the active ingredient) at a time, 4 times a day. DO NOT exceed the maximum dosage, 2g (800mg) at a time.
    To suppress recurrence of genital herpes : In general, for children, take 0.05g/kg (20mg of the active ingredient) at a time, 4 times a day. DO NOT exceed the maximum dosage, 0.5g (200mg) at a time.
    The dosage may be adjusted according to disease, age and symptoms of the patient in any case. Strictly follow the instructions.
  • If you miss a dose, take a dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and follow your regular dosing schedule. You should never take two doses at one time.
  • If you accidentally take more than your prescribed dose, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor instructs you to do so.

Precautions while taking this medicine

  • Take larger amount of water than usual. However, if you are under fluid restriction, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.

Possible adverse effects of this medicine

The most commonly reported adverse reactions include anemia, somnolence, sleepiness, headache, diarrhea, loose stools, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, gastric pain, epigastric pain, stomach discomfort, fever, rash, blister, erythema, hives, itch, fixed drug eruption and photosensitivity. If any of these symptoms occur, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
The symptoms described below are rarely seen as initial symptoms of the adverse effects indicated in brackets. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately.
  • respiratory distress, angioedema, hives[anaphylactoid shock, anaphylactoid symptoms]
  • high fever, general malaise, hematuria, subcutaneous hemorrhage in limbs[pancytopenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, disseminated intravascular coagulation, thrombocytopenic purpura]
  • decrease urine output, edema of extremities and face, general malaise[acute renal failure]
  • impaired consciousness(coma), hallucination, convulsion[neuropsychiatric symptom]
  • high fever, bloodshot eyes, erythema [toxic epidermal necrolysis, mucocutaneous-ocular syndrome]
The above symptoms do not describe all the adverse reactions to this medicine. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any symptoms of concern other than those listed above.

Storage conditions and other information

  • Keep out of the reach of children. Store away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.
  •  Discard the remainder. Do not store them.
