Indications |
Actonel 5 mg Treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women w/ increased risk of osteoporosis. Maintain or increase bone mass in postmenopausal women undergoing long-term (>3 mth) systemic corticosteroid treatment at doses ≥7.5 mg/day prednisone or equivalent. Actonel Once-A-Wk 35 mg Treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women w/ increased risk of osteoporosis. Treatment of osteoporosis in men at high risk of fractures. Actonel Once-A-Mth 150 mg Treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Dosage |
Actonel 5 mg 1 tab daily. Actonel Once-A-Wk 35 mg 1 tab once wkly, taken on the same day each wk. Actonel Once-A-Mth 150 mg 1 tab once mthly, taken on the same date each mth.

Overdosage |
View Actonel overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose. |
Administration |
Should be taken on an empty stomach (5 mg tab to be taken at least 30 min before the 1st food/drink/medication of the day; or at least 2 hr from any food or drink at any other time of the day, & at least 30 min before going to bed. 35 & 150 mg tab to be taken at least 30 min before the 1st food/drink/medication of the day. 5, 35 & 150 mg tab: Take w/ a full glass (≥120 mL) of plain water while in an upright position. Do not lie down for at least 30 min after taking. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush/suck.). |
Contraindications |
Hypersensitivity to bisphosphonates. Hypocalcaemia, severe renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min). Pregnancy & lactation.

Special Precautions |
Re-eva luation of the therapy done periodically for continued therapy. History of oesophageal disorders which delay oesophageal transit or emptying, patients who are unable to stay in the upright position for at least 30 min. Parathyroid dysfunction, hypovitaminosis D. Osteonecrosis of jaw in cancer patients under chemotherapy and glucocorticoids. Dental exam and adequate preventive measures needed prior to treatment with biphosphonates. Galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, glucose-galactose malabsorption.

Adverse Drug Reactions |
Atypical subtrochanteric & diaphyseal femoral fractures, headache, constipation, dyspepsia, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, musculoskeletal pain. Early, transient, asymptomatic and mild decreases in serum Ca and phosphate levels. Iritis, uveitis, osteonecrosis of the jaw, hypersensitivity & skin reactions.
