Dosage |
Surface anaesth: In dentistry 1-5 application to mucous membranes. Otorhinolaryngology 3 applications for puncture of the maxillary sinus. Paracentesis 3 applications. During delivery Up to 20 applications. Introduction of instruments & catheters into the resp & digestive tract Up to 20 applications for procedures in pharynx, larynx & trachea. Childn <12 yr Max: 3 mg/kg. Laryngeal & tracheal procedures 1.5 mg/kg.

Hypersensitivity to amide-type local anaesth.

Special Precautions |
Paralyzed patients under general anaesth; patients w/ traumatized mucosa, partial or complete heart block, advanced liver disease or severe renal dysfunction, debilitated or elderly patients & childn. Oropharyngeal use may interfere w/ swallowing & thus enhance the danger of aspiration. Numbness of the tongue or buccal mucosa may increase the danger of biting trauma. May temporarily impair locomotion & coordination.

Adverse Drug Reactions |
Local irritation, allergic reactions, acute systemic toxicity. CNS toxicity, severe hypotension, bradycardia, arrhythmia, CV collapse. Rarely, systemic side effects & anaphylactic shock.

Drug Interactions |
Agents structurally related to local anaesth. Use in caution w/ antiarrhythmics class III, cimetidine or β-blockers.

Pregnancy Category (US FDA) |
Category B: Either animal-reproduction studies have not demonstrated a foetal risk but there are no controlled studies in pregnant women or animal-reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect (other than a decrease in fertility) that was not confirmed in controlled studies in women in the 1st trimester (and there is no evidence of a risk in later trimesters). |
