Indications |
Temporary treatment of epilepsy in adult & childn, as a replacement for oral form when oral therapy is temporarily unusable. |
|
Dosage |
Initially 15 mg/kg slow IV over 3 min followed by 1-2 mg/kg/hr infusion. |
|
Contraindications |
Hypersensitivity to divalproate & valpromide. Acute & chronic hepatitis. History of serious hepatitis particularly drug related. Hepatic porphyria. Concomitant mefloquine or St. John's wort. |

Special Precautions |
Do not administer IM. Perform liver function & blood test prior to therapy. Pancreatitis, hepatic & renal impairment, urea cycle enzyme deficiency. Avoid concomitant salicylates in childn. Childn w/ history of unexplained hepatodigestive symptoms, access of lethargy or coma, mental retardation or family history of neonatal or childhood death, metabolic investigations, particularly fasting & postprandial serum ammonia. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy, lactation. |

Adverse Drug Reactions |
Nausea or dizziness, digestive disorder, liver dysfunction, teratogenic risk, confusion or seizure conditions, hyperammoniaemia, skin reactions. Hair loss, fine postural tremor & drowsiness; headache, localised tissue necrosis, wt gain, amenorrhea & menstrual disorders.

Antidepressants, neuroleptics, mefloquine, bupropion, tramadol, lamotrigine, aztreonam, imipenem, meropenem, carbamazepine, felbamate, phenobarb, primidone, phenytoin, topiramate, nimodipine, OC.
