Indications |
Infections due to susceptible strains of microorganism: Resp & biliary tract, GIT, skin & soft tissue, bone & joint, genital infections, septicemia, endocarditis. |

Dosage |
IM/IV Adult 1-4 g daily in divided doses 6-12 hrly. Childn 25-50 mg/kg body wt daily in divided doses 6-8 hrly. |

Contraindications |
Hypersensitivity. |

Special Precautions |
Penicillin-allergic patients. Impaired renal function. Patients receiving potent diuretics & nephrotoxic antibiotics. |
|
Adverse Drug Reactions |
Diarrhea; hypersensitivity, eosinophilia, genital & oral candidiasis, phlebitis. Rarely, pseudomembranous colitis, anaphylaxis, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia.

Drug Interactions |
Bacteriostatic antibiotics may reduce cephalosporin effectiveness. Probenecid may increase & prolong cephalosporin plasma levels & toxicity.

Pregnancy Category (US FDA) |
Category B: Either animal-reproduction studies have not demonstrated a foetal risk but there are no controlled studies in pregnant women or animal-reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect (other than a decrease in fertility) that was not confirmed in controlled studies in women in the 1st trimester (and there is no evidence of a risk in later trimesters). |
