Indications |
Sepsis; meningitis; infections in patients w/ impaired defense mechanisms; peri-op prophylaxis of infections; infection of the bones, joints, renal, soft tissue, skin & wound, resp tract & GUT; abdominal infections, genital infections including gonorrhea, ENT infection. Disseminated Lyme borreliosis (early & late stages).

Dosage |
IM/IV Adult & childn >12 yr 1-2 g once daily. Severe infections 4 g once daily. Max: 4 g/day. Infant & childn 20-80 mg/kg. Neonate 20-50 mg/kg, max: 50 mg/kg. To be given once daily. Duration of treatment: 48-72 hr. Meningitis Infant & childn 100 mg/kg, max 4 g once daily. Duration of therapy: Neisseria meningitidis 4 days, H. influenzae 6 days, Strep pneumoniae 7 days. Lyme borreliosis 50 mg/kg to a max of 2 g once daily for 14 days. Gonorrhea A single IM dose of 250 mg. Peri-op prophylaxis A single dose of 1-2 g 30-90 min prior to surgery. Do not use diluents containing Ca, a precipitate may form.

Contraindications |
Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins. Hyperbilirubinemic & preterm newborns. Co-administration w/ Ca treatment in newborns, neonates (<28 days).

Special Precautions |
Previous hypersensitivity to penicillins. Severe renal & hepatic failure. Superinfections may occur; patients preceding major therapy, severe illness & TPN. Pregnancy, lactation.

Adverse Drug Reactions |
GI upsets, hematological changes, skin reactions, coagulation disorders, phlebitis (IV administration). Rarely, agranulocytosis, renal precipitations.

Pregnancy Category (US FDA) |
Category B: Either animal-reproduction studies have not demonstrated a foetal risk but there are no controlled studies in pregnant women or animal-reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect (other than a decrease in fertility) that was not confirmed in controlled studies in women in the 1st trimester (and there is no evidence of a risk in later trimesters). |
