How does it work?
Normacol plus granules contain two active ingredients, sterculia and frangula. These are both natural laxative medicines that are used to treat constipation.
Sterculia is a type of medicine known as a bulk-forming laxative. It is a vegetable gum from thekaraya tree and a natural dietary fibre. Sterculia is not absorbed or digested in the stomach or intestines. It swells when it comes into contact with fluids and works by increasing the volume of the gut contents, forming a soft bulky stool. This stimulates the muscular movement of the gut, which helps to move the stool through the intestines.
Frangula comes from the alderbuckthorn plant. It is a mild stimulant laxative that works by stimulating the nerve endings in the walls of the large intestine (colon) and rectum. This causes the muscles in the large intestine to contract more often and with increased force, thus moving the stool through the colon to the rectum so that the bowel can be emptied. This relieves constipation.
The combination of these medicines normally produces a laxative effect within 12 hours.
The granules should be taken once or twice a day after meals. They should be placed dry on the tongue and swallowed immediately without chewing or crushing, with plenty of water or a cool drink. The granules may also be sprinkled onto soft food such as yoghurt and swallowed without chewing or crushing. Wash down with a drink.
