How does it work?
Primacor injection contains the active ingredient milrinone, which is a type of medicine called a phosphodiesterase type-3 inhibitors.
Milrinone works be blocking the action of an enzyme called phosphodiesterase which regulates the flow of calcium into and out of muscle cells. Calcium is required for the contraction of muscle cells.
Milrinone acts blocking the action of a chemical called phosphodiesterase. Phosphodiesterase normally regulates the flow of salts into and out of muscle cells. These salts (particularly calcium) are required for the contraction of muscle cells.
By blocking the action of phosphodiesterase, this medicine causes an increase in the amount of calcium entering the muscle cells of the heart. This results in an increased ability of the muscle cells of the heart to contract, thereby allowing the heart to beat with greater force.
Milrinone also causes blood vessels to widen, which decreases the pressure against which the heart has to pump. The overall effect is to improve the heart's ability to pump blood around the body. Milrinone is therefore used in the short term to improve heart function in severe heart failure.
