Effects of this medicine

This medicine enhances the transfer of levodopa into the brain by inhibition of amino-acid decarboxylase, and changes levodopa into dopamine to supplement insufficient dopamine, and consequently improves symptoms such as movement disorders in daily life, tremor of limbs, abnormal posture, muscle rigidity and slow movement associated with Parkinson's disease and parkinsonian syndrome.
It is usually used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and parkinsonian syndrome.

Before using this medicine, be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist

  • If you have previously experienced any allergic reactions (itch, rash, etc.) to any medicines.
    If you have angle-closure glaucoma.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are taking any other medicinal products. (Some medicines may interact to enhance or diminish medicinal effects. Beware of over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements as well as other prescription medicines.)

Dosing schedule (How to take this medicine)

  • Your dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor is <<        to be written by a healthcare professional>>
  • If you have never taken levodopa before: In general, for adults, the initial dose is started at 1 to 3 tablets (100 to 300 mg of levodopa) daily, in 1 to 3 divided doses, after meal. The daily dose is increased by 1 to 2 tablets (100 to 200 mg) every 2 or 3 days, then take 3 to 6 tablets (300 to 600 mg) daily, as the maintenance dose.
    If you have been taking Levodopa: In general, for adults, the initial dose is determined based on equivalent to one fifth of levodopa (this preparation contains 100 mg of levodopa in a tablet) of the daily maintenance dose that you are taking, and take it in 1 to 3 divided doses daily, after meal. After that, the dosage may be adjusted, then take 3 to 6 tablets (300 to 600 mg) daily, as the maintenance dose.
    In any case, the dosage may be adjusted according to the age or symptoms. Strictly follow the instructions.
  • If you miss a dose, take a dose as soon as possible when you remember that you missed a dose. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. You should never take two doses at one time.
  • If you accidentally take more than your prescribed dose, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor instructs you to do so.

Precautions while taking this medicine

  • The medicine may cause sudden sleep or drowsiness; difficulty in seeing; decline of attention, concentration or reflection. Avoid driving a car or operating dangerous machinery after taking the medicine.

Possible adverse reactions to this medicine

The most commonly reported adverse reactions include involuntary movement, insomnia, hallucination, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite. If any of these symptoms occur, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
The symptoms described below are rarely seen as initial symptoms of the adverse reactions indicated in brackets. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately.
  • muscle rigidity, fever, impaired consciousness [neuroleptic malignant syndrome]
  • unconsciousness, difficulty in thinking, seeing things or hearing sounds that do not exist, depression, not feel like doing anything [confusion, hallucination, depression]
  • nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain [deterioration of gastric or duodenal ulcer]
  • light headness, yellowing of the skin/the white of eyes, fatiguability [hemolytic anemia, thrombopenia]
  • sudden drowsiness without any sign [sudden sleep]
  • severe eye pain, headache, sudden visual loss [angle-closure glaucoma]
The above symptoms do not describe all the adverse reactions to this medicine. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any symptoms of concern other than those listed above.

Storage conditions and other information

  • Keep out of the reach of children. Store away from light, heat and moisture (the medicine is hygroscopic).
  • Discard the remainder. Do not store them.
  • If you may have angle-closure glaucoma, take a gonioscopy or intraocular pressure test.
  •  [To family members] Despite an unfavorable social outcome, the following symptoms may appear: repeated gambling, repeated excessive unplanned shopping, and an abnormal rise in sexual desire and appetite, etc. If any of these symptoms are observed, consult with your doctor.
