Indications |
Prophylaxis of systemic embolism in rheumatic heart disease & atrial fibrillation. Prophylaxis & treatment of venous thrombosis & pulmonary embolism. Transient cerebral ischaemic attacks. Prophylaxis of thromboembolism after insertion of prosthetic heart valve. |

Dosage |
Individualised dosage. Adult Initial loading dose: 10 mg daily. |

Administration |
May be taken with or without food |

Contraindications |
Pregnancy, w/in 3 days of surgery. Bacterial endocarditis. Severe renal or hepatic disease, actual or potential haemorrhagic conditions. |

Special Precautions |
Changes in patient's clinical status. Renal damage, wt changes, altered uptake of vit K. New medication added to or w/drawn from the regimen, dose of concurrent medication is changed, bleeding symptoms. |
|
Adverse Drug Reactions |
Haemorrhage, diarrhoea, GI irritation, agranulocytosis, leukopenia, "purple toes" syndrome. If purpura, fever, nausea & vomiting, pancreatitis, epistaxis & haemothorax occur, discontinue treatment immediately.

Drug Interactions |
Hepatic enzyme inhibitors & inducers. Sucralfate. OCs, griseofulvin, vit K, phenytoin, corticosteroids, cholestyramine. Drugs w/ antiplatelet effects.

Pregnancy Category (US FDA) |
Category X: Studies in animals or human beings have demonstrated foetal abnormalities or there is evidence of foetal risk based on human experience or both, and the risk of the use of the drug in pregnant women clearly outweighs any possible benefit. The drug is contraindicated in women who are or may become pregnant. |
