Indications |
Therapy & prophylaxis of malaria, particularly caused by strains of P. falciparum resistant to 4-aminoquinolines. |
Dosage |
Therapy Childn <45 kg 25 mg/kg body wt. Non-immune patient 45-60 kg Initially 3 tab then 2 tab 6-8 hr later, >60 kg Take an additional tab after a further 6-8 hr. Semi-immune patients: 45-60 kg 3 tab as a single dose, >60 kg Take an additional tab 6-8 hr later. Prophylaxis Adult & childn >45 kg 1 tab wkly starting 2-3 wk before departure, continuous intake during travel period & additional 4 wk after leaving the endemic area. Childn 31-45 kg ¾ tab wkly, 20-30 kg ½ tab wkly, 10-19 kg ¼ tab wkly; 5-9 kg 1/8 tab wkly. |
Administration |
Should be taken with food (Best taken w/ meals & a full glass of water.). |
Contraindications |
History of psychiatric disturbances or convulsions, young childn, lactation. Hypersensitivity. |
Special Precautions |
Renal or hepatic impairment. Cardiac conduction diseases. Pregnancy. Epilepsy. May impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. |
Adverse Drug Reactions |
Dizziness, balance disturbance, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite.

Drug Interactions |
Quinine or related compd, valproic acid. Cardioactive agents eg β-blockers. Oral live typhoid vaccines.
