Indications |

Dosage |
The lowest dosage that results in effective anaesth should be used. Infiltration 25 mL. Epidural anaesth Lumbar: 10-25 mL.

Overdosage |
View Xylocaine W/ Adrenaline overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose. |
Contraindications |
Patients w/ thyrotoxicosis or severe heart disease, particularly when tachycardia is present. In areas of the body supplied by end arteries or otherwise having a compromised blood supply eg digits, nose, external ear, penis, etc. Not for IV regional techniques. Not to be used for epidural or spinal anaesth in patients w/ uncorrected hypotension or coagulation disorders or receiving anticoagulation treatment. Known hypersensitivity to local anaesth of the amide-type or sodium metabisulphite, or methyl parahydroxybenzoate (MDV only).

Special Precautions |
Monitor CV & resp vital signs, nurologic impairment. Patient w/ epilepsy, impaired cardiac conduction, bradycardia, severe shock or digitalis intoxication, Stokes-Adam syndrome. Central nerve blocks. Preexisting abnormal neurological pathology. Hepatic & renal impairment. Foetal bradycardia/tachycardia. Monitor ECG for patient under antiarrythmic drugs class III. Soln w/ adrenaline.

Adverse Drug Reactions |
CNS reactions either excitatory or depressant. CV reactions, mainly depressant. Maternal hypotension. Rarely allergic reaction.

Drug Interactions |
Antiarrhythmic drugs eg lignocaine, disopyramide, procainamide, moxilone; amiodarone; β-adrenoreceptor antagonists eg propranolol & metoprolol; cimetidine; anticonvulsive agents, phenytoin, phenobarb, primidone, carbamazepine; inhalational anaesth eg nitrous oxide; skeletal muscle relaxant; CNS-acting drugs, phenothiazine, butyrophenone; oxytoxic drug of the ergot-type; adrenergic neuron blocker; cardiac glycosides; β-blockers; quinidine; hypoglycaemics.
