Metronidazole |
Indications |
Prevention of post-op infections due to anaerobic bacteria particularly Bacteroides sp & anaerobic Strep. Treatment of septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, brain abscess, necrotising pneumonia, osteomyelitis, puerperal sepsis, pelvic abscess & cellulitis, & post-op wound infections. Urogenital trichomoniasis in the female (trichomonal vaginitis) & in male. Bacterial vaginosis, amoebiasis, giardiasis, acute ulcerative gingivitis, leg ulcers & pressure sores. Dental infections (eg acute pericoronitis & acute apical infections). |
Dosage |
Prophylaxis Adult 400 mg 8 hrly. Childn & infant 7.5 mg/kg 8 hrly. Treatment Adult Initially 800 mg followed by 400 mg 8 hrly. Childn & infant 7.5 mg/kg 8 hrly. |
Administration |
susp:Should be taken on an empty stomach (Take at least 1 hr before meals.); tab:Should be taken with food (Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.). |
Special Precautions |
If administered for >10 days, regular clinical & laboratory monitoring are recommended. Re-administer immediately after haemodialysis. Patient w/ hepatic encephalopathy. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. |
Adverse Drug Reactions |
Peripheral neuropathy or transient epileptiform seizures (intensive or prolonged therapy). Occasionally, taste disorders, oral mucositis, furred tongue, nausea, vomiting, GI disturbances, anorexia, urticaria & angioedema.

Drug Interactions |
Alcohol may cause disulfiram-like reaction. Potentiates anticoagulant effect of warfarin-type oral anticoagulants. Plasma levels of lithium may be increased. Phenobarb increases the metabolism of metronidazole. Busulfan.

Category B: Either animal-reproduction studies have not demonstrated a foetal risk but there are no controlled studies in pregnant women or animal-reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect (other than a decrease in fertility) that was not confirmed in controlled studies in women in the 1st trimester (and there is no evidence of a risk in later trimesters). |
