Indications |
Supply of energy & essential fatty acids as IV soln.

Dosage |
Adult Max 3 g triglycerides (TG)/kg/day. Infusion rate should not exceed 500 mL in 5 hrs. Neonate & infant 0.5-4 g TG/kg/day. Infusion rate should not exceed 0.17 g TG/kg/hr. Premature & low birth wt neonate Continuous infusion over 24 hr. Initially 0.5-1 g/kg/day, may be increased by 0.5-1 g/kg/day up to 2 g/kg/day. Essential fatty acid deficiency 4-8% of nonprotein energy requirement to be supplied by Intralipid.

Contraindications |
Severe hyperlipemia & liver insufficiency, acute shock, hemophagocytotic syndrome. Soy, peanut & egg allergy.

Special Precautions |
Renal insufficiency, uncompensated DM, pancreatitis, impaired liver function (monitor liver function), hypothyroidism (if hypertriglyceridemic) & sepsis. Neonates & prematures w/ hyperbilirubinemia & pulmonary HTN. Platelet count, liver test & serum TG conc should be monitored in neonates on long-term parenteral nutrition.
