Dosage |
Tab Ulcerative colitis Adult Acute: Up to 4 g daily in divided doses, maintenance: 2 g daily in divided doses. Childn >2 yr 20-30 mg/kg daily. Crohn's disease Adult Up to 4 g daily in divided doses. Childn <2 yr 20-30 mg/kg daily in divided doses. Sachet Ulcerative colitis Adult Up to 4 g daily in divided doses, maintenance: 1.5-2 g daily in divided doses. Childn 20-30 mg/kg body wt daily in divided doses. Crohn's disease Adult Up to 4 g daily in divided doses. Childn 20-30 mg/kg body wt daily in divided doses. Supp Ulcerative proctitis Adult 1 supp once-bd. Enema Proctosigmoiditis Adult 1 g at bedtime.

Overdosage |
View Pentasa overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose. |

Administration |
May be taken with or without food (Tab: Swallow whole, do not chew/crush. If necessary, tab may be halved along score-line or suspended in water/juice immediately before use. Sachet: Empty the contents of the sachet onto the tongue. Swallow granules down w/ some water/juice, do not chew/crush.). |

Contraindications |
Sensitivity to salicylates. Severe hepatic or renal disease.

Special Precautions |
Patients allergic to sulfasalazine. Renal & hepatic impairment. Infant & childn <2 yr.

Adverse Drug Reactions |
Gastric discomfort (diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting), headache & rash. Minor rectal irritation. Muscle & joint pain, temporary hair loss, shortness of breath, liver & kidney dysfunction, changes in blood components & inflammation of the cardiac muscle & sac (rarely).

Pregnancy Category (US FDA) |
Category B: Either animal-reproduction studies have not demonstrated a foetal risk but there are no controlled studies in pregnant women or animal-reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect (other than a decrease in fertility) that was not confirmed in controlled studies in women in the 1st trimester (and there is no evidence of a risk in later trimesters). |
