Dosage Initially 5 mg daily w/ breakfast. Titrate in increments of 2.5 or 5 mg daily. Max: 20 mg daily.

Overdosage View Glucotrol XL overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose.
Administration Should be taken with food (Swallow whole, do not chew/crush/divide.).
Contraindications Type I diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, w/ or w/o coma.

Special Precautions G6PD deficiency, hypoglycemia, renal, hepatic or adrenal/pituitary insufficiency. Loss of blood glucose control. Periodic monitoring of blood glucose levels. Preexisting severe GI narrowing. Elderly, debilitated or malnourished patients. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.

Adverse Drug Reactions Leucopenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, aplastic anemia & pancytopenia; hypoglycemia, hyponatremia, disulfiram-like reactions; confusion; headache, tremor; visual disturbances; abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, epigastric discomfort & vomiting; cholestatic jaundice (discontinue), toxic hepatitis & hepatic porphyria; allergic skin reactions; malaise.

Drug Interactions Increase hypoglycemic effect w/ miconazole, fluconazole, voriconazole, NSAIDs eg phenylbutazone; salicylates, alcohol, β-blockers, ACE inhibitors, H2-receptor antagonists ie cimetidine, MAOIs, sulfonamides, chloramphenicol, probenecid, coumarins. May lead to hyperglycemia w/ phenothiazines eg chlorpromazine, corticosteroids, sympathomimetics eg ritodrine, salbutamol, terbutaline; thiazides, diuretics, thyroid products, estrogens, progestogens, OC, phenytoin, nicotinic acid, Ca-channel blockers, INH.
