Dexmedetomidine HCl |
Indications |
Sedation of initially intubated & mechanically ventilated patients during treatment in an intensive care setting. |
Dosage |
W/draw 2 mL & add to 48 mL of 0.9% NaCl inj to a total of 50 mL. Adult Loading dose: 1 mcg/kg over 10 min. For patients already sedated w/ other anaesth, sedatives, hypnotics or opioid analgesics, a loading dose may not be necessary. Maintenance infusion: 0.2-0.7 mcg/kg/hr. Adjust rate of the maintenance infusion to achieve the desired level of sedation. It is not necessary to discontinue prior to extubation. |

Special Precautions |
Advanced heart block, severe ventricular dysfunction, transient HTN, renal & hepatic impairment, high vagal tone. Do not inj by bolus or rapid IV. Not to be administered for >24 hr. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly (>65 yr). Childn. |
Adverse Drug Reactions |
Hypotension, HTN, nausea, bradycardia, fever, vomiting, atrial fibrillation, anaemia, dry mouth.

Drug Interactions |
Enhanced effects w/ vasodilators & negative chronotropic agents, anaesth, sedatives, hypnotics & other CNS depressants, opioids. Do not co-administer via same IV line w/ blood or plasma.

Pregnancy Category (US FDA) |
Category C: Either studies in animals have revealed adverse effects on the foetus (teratogenic or embryocidal or other) and there are no controlled studies in women or studies in women and animals are not available. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus. |
