Ceftriaxone disodium |
|
Indications |
Sepsis, meningitis, disseminated Lyme borreliosis; abdominal, renal, UTI, resp tract (particularly pneumonia), ear, genital (including gonorrhoea) infections; infections of bones, joints, soft tissue, skin & wounds; infections in patients w/ impaired defense mechanisms. Pre-op prophylaxis of infections. |

Dosage |
Adult & childn >12 yr 1-2 g daily 24 hrly. Severe infections 4 g daily. Infant & childn 15 days-12 yr 20-80 mg/kg daily. Neonate ≤14 days 20-50 mg/kg daily. |

Contraindications |
Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins. Premature neonates. Do not administer w/in 48 hrs of treatment w/ IV Ca-containing solns in newborns. |

Special Precautions |
Previous hypersensitivity to penicillins. Anaphylactic shock. May cause pseudomembranous colitis, pancreatitis. Pregnancy & lactation. Hyperbilirubinemic neonates. |

Adverse Drug Reactions |
GI upsets, haematological changes, skin reactions, phlebitis (IV administration).

Pregnancy Category (US FDA) |
Category B: Either animal-reproduction studies have not demonstrated a foetal risk but there are no controlled studies in pregnant women or animal-reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect (other than a decrease in fertility) that was not confirmed in controlled studies in women in the 1st trimester (and there is no evidence of a risk in later trimesters). |
