Amiodarone HCl |

Indications |
Tab Prevention of recurrences of ventricular tachycardia, supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation. Treatment of supraventricular tachycardia, slowing or reduction in atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. Amp Serious rhythm disturbances when the oral route is not appropriate eg atrial arrhythmia, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome tachycardia; documented symptomatic & incapacitating ventricular arrhythmia. |

Dosage |
Tab Initially 1 tab tds for 8-10 days. Maintenance: ½ (1 tab every 2 days) to 2 tab/day. IV infusion Initially 5 mg/kg in glucose soln over 20 min-2 hr, repeated bd-tds. Maintenance: 10-20 mg/kg/day in 250 mL glucose soln over a few days. |

Administration |
May be taken with or without food (Administer consistently w/ regard to meals. Take w/ meals if high dose or to reduce GI discomfort.). |

Contraindications |
Sinus bradycardia & SA block corrected by a pacemaker; sinus disease & high-degree conduction disorders not corrected by a pacemaker; hyperthyroidism; hypersensitivity to iodine. Circulatory collapse, severe hypotension, childn <3 yr in amp use. Combination w/ drugs that can induce torsades de pointes. Pregnancy & lactation. |

Special Precautions |
Perform an ECG before start of treatment. Hypokalaemia, thyroid anomalies, anaesth. Monitor liver function. Avoid exposure to sun or use sun protection during treatment. |

Adverse Drug Reactions |
Tab Reversible corneal microdeposits, skin pigmentation, photosensitization, hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, interstitial or alveolar pneumopathy, bronchiolitis obliterans organising pneumonia, peripheral neuropathies & myopathies, bradycardia, GI disturbances. Ophthalmological exam if blurred vision or reduced visual acuity. Elevation in transaminases &/or jaundice. Amp Superficial phlebitis, hot flushes, sweating, nausea, hair loss, severe hypotension or circulatory collapse, bradycardia, hepatic disorders, acute resp distress syndrome, interstitial pneumonia.

Antiarrhythmics, bepridil, cisapride, diphemanil, erythromycin IV, mizolastine, vincamine IV, sultopride, sparfloxacin, neuroleptics inducing torsades de pointes, halofantrine, moxifloxacin, pentamidine, β-blockers, cyclosporin, diltiazem, verapamil, lumefantrine, methadone, nevibolol, orlistat, tacrolimus, lidocaine, oral anticoagulants, digitalis drugs, esmolol, K-lowering agents, phenytoin, Ca-channel blockers, anticholinesterase drugs, simvastatin.
