COMPOSITION:
Benzyl benzoate emulsion 25g/100mL (25% m/v).
PHARMACOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION:
A 13.2 Anti-scabies medicines.
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION:
ASCABIOL is used for the treatment of scabies and of pediculosis. In scabies it affords rapid relief from itching.
INDICATIONS:
ASCABIOL is an efficient acaricide and is used in the treatment of scabies. Ascabiol is also indicated in the treatment of pediculosis.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS:
Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
Treatment of Scabies:

Take a hot bath and rub the affected areas thoroughly with a flannel, using soap. The finger and toe nails should be cut short. |

After drying, apply the liquid to the whole body except the face and head. The best method is to paint the liquid on with a flat, soft paint brush of about 5centimeters wide. Every part of the body from neck to toes should be covered. It is particularly important that the application should be thoroughly made to the affected areas and the fingers and nails. Special attention should be paid to the toes, wrists, ankles, armpits, buttocks and groin. |

After painting, the body is allowed to dry, which, in a warm room, takes five to ten minutes. After this the patient can get dressed. It is desirable but not essential, to put on clean underclothing and to have clean night garments and bed linen. |

Discarded undergarments and linen are effectively disinfected by the ordinary process of washing and ironing. |

Provided it is thorough, the single application of the liquid should suffice. A second painting can be made three or four days after the first, to ensure complete eradication of scabies. |

Paediatric Dosage: |
To minimise the risk of irritation, dilute with water as follows:

For infants: |
Dilute with 3parts water. |

For older children: |
Dilute with an equal quantity of water. |
Note:
Successful treatment depends on ASCABIOL being applied thoroughly to every part of the body except the face and head. All infected persons living in the household, or likely to contract the infection, should be treated at the same time.
Treatment of pediculosis:
This emulsion has a solvent action on the cement of the nit in addition to being highly effective for killing the lice. It may be employed for Pediculosis capitis when complicated by impetigo.
The method to use is to coat the head, using a 3 to 5centimeters wide paint brush, on the first day. On the next day the hair is washed with soap and water. A week later the head should be inspected carefully for possible reinfection. If the infestation is very heavy, treatment is given twice in 24 hours. If there is coincident coccal infection of the scalp, the treatment is repeated on the second and third successive days. An appropriate ointment may then be used until inspection of the scalp a week later. This preparation is also effective in Pediculosis pubis.
SIDE-EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS:
ASCABIOL is an irritant to the eyes and mucous membranes and it may be an irritant to the skin.
Hypersensitivity reactions have been reported.
KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE AND PARTICULARS OF ITS TREATMENT:
When ingested, benzyl benzoate may cause stimulation of the CNS (Central Nervous System) and convulsions.
Treatment of poisoning involves gastric lavage and appropriate symptomatic measures.
IDENTIFICATION:
A mildly perfumed white emulsion.
PRESENTATION:
Bottles containing 100mL.
STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS:
Store in a cool (below 25°C).
