PHARMACOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION:
A:22.1.4 Vitamins. Other.
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION:
Dietary supplementation.
VitaminC or ascorbic acid is a water soluble vitamin easily lost to the body and unstable, being sensitive to light and air. Illness, diet, drugs, cooking and modern food processing destroy it and supplementation for nutritional support may then be required.
Ascorbic acid functions in a number of metabolic reactions such as collagen synthesis of teeth and bones.
Recent research indicates that ascorbic acid plays an essential role in fighting infection.
INDICATIONS:
Indicated as a dietary supplement where a deficiency of vitaminC exists such as may occur from smoking, drinking alcohol, dieting or slimming.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS:
Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
WARNINGS:
None.
DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
C-500mg:
One tablet to be taken one to two times daily with or after meals.
Massif-C:
One gram (1/4 medicine measure/teaspoonful) to be taken daily in a large glass of water or fruit juice, preferably sipped through a straw.
SIDE-EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS:
Large doses may cause diarrhoea and the formation of renal calcium oxalate calculi.
Doses of 600mg or more daily have a diuretic action.
Tolerance may be induced by patients taking high doses.
VitaminC should be given with care to patients with hyperoxaluria.
Patients with gout and/or a tendency to form kidney stones may be at increased risk with extended use.
Diabetics taking more than 500mg per day may obtain false readings in their urinary glucose tests.
KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE AND PARTICULARS OF ITS TREATMENT:
The treatment of overdosage is supportive and symptomatic.
