PHARMACOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION:
A 15.4 Ophthalmic preparation: Other.
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION:
Pilocarpine nitrate is a parasympathomimetic drug, which is used to produce tonic constriction of the sphincter pupillae and ciliary muscles, by prolonging and intensifying the action of the parasympathetic nerves.
INDICATIONS:
Pilocarpine nitrate is used to constrict the pupil, to counteract the effect of mydriatic drugs such as atropine and phenylephrine and to decrease the intra-ocular pressure in the treatment of open-angle and closed-angle glaucoma, and detachment of the retina. As a miotic, it is only about half as active as physostigmine, and its action is less complete and of shorter duration.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS:
Pilocarpine nitrate should not be used in patients suffering from bronchial asthma.
DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
Adults and children: To be used as directed by the ophthalmologist. Duration of action is 4to 6hours.
SIDE EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS:
Some discomfort on instillation. Systemic effects, not normally seen on ocular administration are those of parasympathetic stimulation; namely, increased production of saliva, sweat and tears, followed by nausea, profuse vomiting and diarrhoea.
