Indications for DESONATE:
Mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis.
Adults and Children:
<3months: not recommended. ≥3months: apply thin layer to affected area(s) twice daily; max 4 weeks of therapy. Do not occlude.
Contraindications:
Do not use superpotent forms on face, groin, or axillae. Exclude viral disease (eg, chickenpox, measles).
Warnings/Precautions:
Treat infection if present; discontinue if infection persists or worsens. Do not use near eyes, or on diaper dermatitis or pre-existing skin atrophy. Do not use fluorinated steroids longer than 1 week on the face. Avoid abrupt cessation in chronic use. Systemic absorption increased by broken or inflamed skin, prolonged use, application to large surface area, or use of occlusive dressings. Occlude only if necessary; do not occlude higher potency products. Monitor adrenal function in children if a high potency product or occlusion is used, and in adults if more than 50g weekly of a high potency product is used. Discontinue or reduce dose or potency if HPA axis suppression, Cushing's syndrome, hyperglycemia, glucosuria, or irritation occurs. Use lowest effective dose and potency (esp. in children). Use caution if applying to face or body folds. Do not use continuously or for prophylaxis. Foams are flammable. Reeva luate periodically. Pregnancy (Cat.C). Nursing mothers.
Adverse Reactions:
Burning, stinging, pruritus, erythema, skin atrophy, striae, miliaria, secondary infections, hypopigmentation, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, acneiform eruptions, dermal cracking and fissuring, telangiectasia, contact dermatitis, other local effects, immunosuppression, masks infections, HPA axis suppression (esp. in children).

Desonate(desonide) Gel 0.05% is a prescription medication used to treat mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (a certain type of eczema) in patients 3 months of age and older.
Use Desonate® for the minimum amount of time as necessary to achieve the desired results because of the potential for Desonate® to suppress the levels of certain hormones in the body (a condition called hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression). You should not use Desonate® for more than 4 consecutive weeks.
Indication & Usage
Desonate® (desonide) Gel 0.05% is a prescription medication used to treat mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (a certain type of eczema) in patients 3 months of age and older.
Use Desonate® for the minimum amount of time as necessary to achieve the desired results because of the potential for Desonate® to suppress the levels of certain hormones in the body (a condition called hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression). You should not use Desonate® for more than 4 consecutive weeks.
Important safety information
Do not use Desonate® if you have a history of hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in Desonate®.
Drugs like Desonate® may reduce the levels of certain hormones in the body (a condition called reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression) which may cause a decrease in certain steroids normally produced in the body, a condition called Cushing’s syndrome, high blood sugar and/or unmasking of hidden diabetes. Your doctor will periodically check you for signs of HPA axis suppression. If you do experience HPA axis suppression, your doctor will either gradually take you off Desonate®, reduce how many times a day you apply it, or switch you to another drug that is not as strong. Tell your doctor if you are using any other corticosteroid topical drugs like Desonate® as it may increase your risk of experiencing HPA axis suppression.
Pediatric patients may be more likely to experience these side effects from Desonate® use. Unless your doctor tells you to do so, do not use Desonate® on the underarm or groin area of children. Do not use to treat skin irritation from diaper use. Use in children less than 3 months of age is not recommended.
You may be more likely to experience local adverse reactions on the skin if you use tight bandages or dressings, use Desonate® for a long period of time, or use other strong corticosteroid drugs. These reactions may include thinning of the skin, stripes, small dilated blood vessels on the skin, burning, itching, irritation, dryness, infection of the hair follicles, an inflammatory form of acne (acneiform eruptions), loss of skin color, rash around the mouth, allergic contact dermatitis, secondary infection, and heat rash. Some of these reactions may be permanent.
If you have or develop a skin infection while using Desonate®, tell your doctor and seek medical treatment. If your infection does not resolve, stop using Desonate® until the infection is controlled.
If irritation develops, stop using Desonate® and talk to your doctor about appropriate treatment.
The most common adverse reactions with Desonate® are headache, application site burning, and rash.
Desonate® is for topical use only. Not for ophthalmic, oral or intravaginal use. As with other corticosteroids, Desonate® should be stopped when control is achieved.
